Points leader Checa prepares for Dutch action

623_r02_checa_podiumChampionship leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) is all set to return to the historic TT circuit of Assen, where round 3 of the World Superbike Championship is taking place this coming weekend.

Ducati’s home track of Imola was the setting for Round 2 of the championship, which took place just over a fortnight ago. Carlos could not have done better in front of what he considers to be his adoptive home crowd, beating off competition, in the form of Sykes on the Kawasaki, to power his Ducati 1198 to a double win, and 50 precious championship points.

Last year at Assen, Carlos celebrated success with a race win and a third place finish so both the rider and team will be hoping for similar results at this particular circuit, well aware that other, trickier tracks for the Ducati are looming.

Carlos Checa: “Imola was a really fantastic event that couldn’t have gone better for me! I’m really happy with how it went, also because those points gained are vital for the championship. Now we must turn our attentions to Assen, where I hope to make two strong races before we head to Monza – that will undoubtedly be more difficult for the Ducati. Last year we did well at the TT circuit, a win and a third place – we’ll be aiming for similar results again this time around.”

But the Republic of San Marino rider is not riding a motorcycle manufacturer Honda Gresini team as he got in the 2008-2009 season, but the motor CRT’s Colin Edwards, Forward Racing Team MotoGP rider.

De Angelis was given the opportunity to try the latest electronic devices for motor-BMW Suter, despite bad weather makes it unable to test with the maximum.

“I am delighted to be given this opportunity, namely to make the motor development of CRT’s Suter and BMW,” said De Angelis. “Our trial was shortened due to bad weather, but very fun to ride a 1000cc bike.”

2012 WSBK Assen QP2: Wet, wet, wet

Riders who were able to bank a fast lap yesterday will head off to Superpole and those who missed out will be regretting the fact they didn't get off the mark quickly enough. Yesterday's rains were no surprise as the radar system warned of rain at 15:30 local time, which is why everybody was out immediately trying to put in a 'banker' before conditions got too dangerous for slicks. Today's session was all about finding wet settings.

The big names missing out on Superpole are Max Biaggi and Hiroshi Aoyama who will start from the fifth and sixth rows respectively. It remains to see if Zanetti will be allowed to race as he was outside the 107% required, but Race Direction may allow him to continue at their discretion.

Marco “Sic” Simoncelli Killed in MotoGP Crash

MotoGP has lost a star: Marco Simoncelli

Friends all over the world are morning the death of Italian Superbike racer Marco Simoncelli, who died in a crash Sunday in the first lap of the MotoGP race in Sepang, Malaysian.

The 24-year-old Honda rider, affectionately known as “Sic” lost control and veered across the track into the path of riders Colin Edwards and Simoncelli’s compatriot Valentino Rossi. His helmet was knocked off in the collision that left him face-down and motionless on the asphalt track.

The race at Sepang International Circuit was immediately red-flagged and later cancelled.

Marco died of head, neck and chest injuries, and cardiac arrest at 4:56pm, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011. With only one remaining race in Spain left in the MotoGP Championship, he was in fierce competition for the top position with Casey Stoner, who is now the undisputed 2011 world champion.

Ironically, his career ended at the same track that was the scene of his 250cc world championship victory in 2008.

American Honda team racer, Colin Edwards reportedly suffered a separated shoulder as a result of the crash, when he fell on the track Sunday. Rossi, who rides for Ducati, made only brief contact with the bikes on the track. He was uninjured but emotionally devastated by the loss.

“Sic for me was like a youngest brother. So strong on track and so sweet in the normal life. I will miss him a lot,” – Valentino Rossi said in the early hours of Monday morning, Malaysian time via his official Twitter account @ValeYellow46.

The last fatal crash in the world motorcycling championship was last year when Japan’s Shoya Tomizawa was killed. MotoGP is the world´s premier motorcycling championship, with a season of 18 Grands Prix in 13 countries bringing together the world´s top motorcycle manufacturers.

Did Kawasaki Just Enter TT Zero Without Anyone Noticing?

The Isle of Man TT sent out an interesting press release yesterday, where it cited the largest competitor entry list in the TT Zero’s race history (lawyer’s crafty word choice note: this does not include when in 2009 the race was run under the TTXGP banner and 23 competitors allegedly entered). With 18 competitors signed up for the single-lap electric motorcycle race around the Mountain Course, we can surely expect the field to dwindle, as …

Rea overcomes hand injury to score popular Assen win

Jonathan Rea

A great ride from Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) saw him overcome the pain of a hand injury suffered earlier in the day to win his first race of the year, at his team’s home track. He also scored the first win for Honda in 2012.

Race one winner Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) was second after his team-mate Jakub Smrz dropped back from his long time race two lead after choosing a wet front tyre. Smrz eventually crashed while trying to pass a lapped rider.

The battle for third went to Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing) his first podium of 2012.

His team-mate Max Biaggi is now leading the championship after finishing eighth in race two, one point ahead of Carlos Checa (Althea Racing). Checa gambled on rain tyres but as the track dried and the rain stayed away, he had to come into change his tyres and he ended up 17th – out of the points. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) dropped back from a potential podium finish to go sixth, and stay third in the overall championship fight, 13 points from Biaggi.
